At BMW of Little Rock’s Service Department, one of the most common questions we receive from BMW X3 owners concerns dashboard warning lights. While these illuminated symbols can seem confusing or alarming, they're designed to help you maintain your vehicle's health and safety. Here's our guide to the most common warning lights you might encounter in your X3.

Check Engine Light

The check engine light is perhaps the most recognized warning indicator. This amber-colored engine symbol can illuminate for various reasons, from a loose gas cap to more serious engine issues. In our experience, the most common causes include faulty oxygen sensors, catalytic converter issues, or problems with the mass airflow sensor. If this light appears, we recommend scheduling a diagnostic appointment soon. If it's flashing, however, pull over safely and call for service immediately, as this indicates a severe problem that could cause engine damage if you continue your I-430 commute.

Brake System Warning Light

Your X3's brake warning light appears as a red circle with an exclamation point or the word "BRAKE." This light typically indicates low brake fluid levels, worn brake pads, or an issue with your parking brake. We often find that customers have simply left their parking brake partially engaged, but if the light remains on after releasing the brake, bring your vehicle in right away. Brake system issues require immediate attention for your safety.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

The TPMS light looks like a tire cross-section with an exclamation point. It activates when one or more tires have significantly low pressure. Temperature changes commonly trigger this light, especially during seasonal transitions. We recommend checking your tire pressure when this light appears—you'll find the correct PSI on the driver's door jamb. If you've inflated your tires correctly and the light persists, you may have a slow leak or a faulty TPMS sensor that needs our attention. Oil Service Indicator

BMW's Condition Based Service system monitors your oil life and displays messages when service is due. You might see "Oil Service" or a yellow oil can symbol. The X3 calculates service intervals based on driving conditions, not just mileage. We typically see these indicators between 7,000 and 10,000 miles, though aggressive driving can shorten this interval. Don't ignore this warning—regular oil changes are critical to your engine's longevity during future Little Rock adventures.

Battery/Charging System Light

A red battery symbol indicates your charging system isn't working properly. This could mean a failing alternator, a worn drive belt, or battery connection issues. Many customers are surprised to learn this light doesn't always mean the battery itself is bad. If this light appears while driving, try to reach our service center immediately, as your vehicle may shut down once the battery's reserve power is depleted.

ABS Warning Light

The Anti-lock Braking System light appears as "ABS" in amber. While your regular brakes will still function if this light is on, you've lost the anti-lock feature that prevents wheel lockup during hard braking. We've found this often relates to wheel speed sensor problems, especially on vehicles frequently driven in winter conditions where road salt can affect these components.

Coolant Temperature Warning

This red thermometer symbol or "COOLANT" message means your engine is overheating. If you see this light, pull over safely and turn off your engine immediately. Continuing to drive can cause catastrophic engine damage. Low coolant levels, thermostat failures, or cooling fan issues are common culprits. At BMW of Little Rock’s Service Department, we use BMW's diagnostic software to accurately identify any issues indicated by warning lights. Dealt with Frank, salesman, and Joseph, Finance coordinator. Met with Frank 3 times on Saturday as we were browsing which turned into acquiring a new vehicle. First was general introduction as he was coming to work, then when the 2025 Audi with 8100 miles caught my wife’s attention and on the second visit she test drove. We had left and came back after visiting several other dealerships to do the test drive all before noon. We actually visited the Audi dealership after the test drive but they did not have that similar car on the lot. . Our 3rd engagement was when we decided to buy and contacted over the phone and sharing necessary paperwork to complete transaction. Very professional, still not sure there was another interested party, but I knew my wife had made a decision. Car was being prepped as we were returning for the 3rd time. Then met Joseph to finalize with dealership, other than pushing the extended warranty several times very good positive engagement. Bit shocked on the fuel up of vehicle charge, and the courtesy detail of car before she left was excellent. Though we did not buy a BMW, we were overall very pleased with the professionalism of both gentlemen.
